I just sold my ktm 690….actually hated it off-road…it was fun on road but wanted to go everywhere at 100mph….i have two Stark’s now as well as several other electric and gas. It hits on power definitely as hard as the 690….it definitely can’t go as far but is way more fun hooligan riding. To be honest the 690 wasn’t that great for a long ride anyway.my ktm 890 is better for that. I also have a 450 xcf and that’s just to loud and hot on the road. The stark is insanely adjustable and that’s really fun.
I commute daily on my Stark Varg SM in mode 5 (80hp), and it is hands down the best city commuter I’ve ever had. Range is terrible, seat is pretty bad, suspension is incredibly stiff, but for quick blasts, or a quick commute to work or the store, nothing beats it. Due to the terrible range, it’s really not practical as an only bike, but in my case, as a fourth bike, yes. To address your concern about the phone, if the bike isn’t locked, you can use it without the phone, but so can anyone else who walks past your bike, so there’s that. Just keep it locked and use the phone.
Would love if my tail light here in the US actually lit up…
I knew you'd cave in mwhahahah. I have the same model and its a blast, always get in places a regular ICE bike won't last 10 mis at.
truly a great bike, glad I bought one........
Please change seat my ass is crying every day on my varg 😢
tried this bike for the first time not to long ago and it almost took off without me🤣🤣
You forgot the black USD forks!!! ;-) Also fix the kickstand on SM! Or throw in an adapter for SM models. The only time it dropped so far it cause fn kickstand is for larger wheels and is too long with 17's and bike is easily tipped over. Had to buy adapter from somwhere else. As well order new rigid carbon side fairings cause they got crushed! Plastic wouldve held up than the chopped carbon.
@stark_future if so I hade one stark. I got rid of it due to dealership issues and you guys were super nice to me it was a blast to ride I want a nuther one need it to go 120 mph and the phone needs to not be so finicky and do its job better I am excited for September 20th to see watt happens with the mph be getting one again 🫡❤️😎😇 best company ever Thanks for taking the bike back too. Temecula motorsports is a horrible dealership thank you guys ❤
@roupantris1396 After about 3 hours of riding, doing wheelies from light to light, I have around 15% battery left. (65hp 38% regen)
I love my stark varg EX, both enduro and SM setup. I also love my 690 SMCR - But this review is so biased, it's crazy. For proper SM riding, my stark is light years ahead of the KTM, if you know how to ride it and adjust it (seems like you only know how to work on suspension, on the bike youre biased towards). For road riding, more than 50 miles, i ALWAYS take my KTM, as thats the only thing its better at.
Maintenance….electric….almost none. 690….you get to worry about cams…but the electric is a great around town bike…not a trip bike. I have had two 690s and actually now own two Stark’s an electric ktm set up with Supermoto wheels. I still have 20 gas bikes.
On the road, my Varg SM (7.2KWH) will do 100 miles per charge when giving it some, or 150 miles riding around 45-50mph, which is more than all 3 of my FireBlades, and more than any of my old 2st YZ250 or CR500. On an SM or MX track 40+ minutes of ride time. Where MX or SM race time is 15 minutes plus one lap, meaning my Varg can do 2 full races back to back. You can watch 100's of videos of them completing full MX or SX races in expert or pro classes, which are max 20 minutes, and done on a single charge. Also, I can swap my battery in 5 minutes, and every serious racer who rides a Varg has 2 or more batteries.
I've ridden both. First, why did you not set-up the fully adjustable suspension on the Varg? It takes 30 seconds to lower compression, and a few minutes to lower the pre-load and drop the forks for the track! And when you buy the bike, they are set for your weight and what you are using it for, but you still need to set it up when on the track. A light bike will always need more setting up for the track. Second, the Varg is a race bike through and through, meaning it must be set up first. The KTM is a road bike with electric safety aids, which is doing half the riding for you. A racer will need to turn it all off, especially for SM or MX, and you can change the brake lever travel and feel. So it's like comparing a MotoGP Lenovo to an R1. Or a CR500/CRF450R to a DRZ400 or a KLX450L. Lastly, I can see the tyres are much too hard when on the track, this will make the bike stiff, even dangerous to ride, and maybe this is why you are riding them so slow, not once did you opposite lock or slide the bikes. I was sliding a Varg SM within 5-6 minutes of my first track test.
I currently own a 2022 ktm 690 and a stark varg EX. Best of both worlds. Most Range and best sound: ktm Most fun: stark absolutely hands down. I end up riding my stark for 90% of the time. When the stark SM gets updated thru the years I see myself selling the 690 for another stark. The stark is a head turner indeed. 80hp on a 120kg bike is absolutely insane. Everyone who knows this bike has huge respect for it. I’m not a racer nor a professional enduro guy, so I don push the bike to their limits. Just for day to day use the stark is my go-to bike. Does not need to warmup, no expensive maintenance, just hopup and blast away. In enduro-hating belgium, being silent is a big plus. I ride mountainbike trails regularly without being yelled at once. After a while I do miss the feeling of a perfect downshift, and the sound of a monocilinder, that’s where the 690 comes in 🎉
@Szlejer I bought a 690 smc r today, a 2015 and sorry but its not as quick as my varg. It doesnt have the immediacy. I cant imagine it being quicker round a go cart track. I have out dragged r1s with my varg
I had both but I prefer the Stark for my hooligan riding............
I have a Varg and a Husky 701. Totally different bikes. The Varg is pure circus performer on one wheel. The Huskie is the easiest to live with and far more practical.
Iˋm missing details like the fully adjustable power modes and throttle curves on the Stark Varg in this video. Besides regen can be adjusted to your liking. Once set, you can switch between 4 power modes by button on the handle bar. I‘m using my Varg SM as daily for commuting and itˋs just super fun to ride. I really like the Varg front brake but no ABS should be mentioned 😉
I love my Varg EX.. Put Anakee wilds on it, changed the 1st sprocket to 14 tooth, it does 100Mph, crazy acceleration. love it
I thiknk these bikes are on different categories. I would not compare them. I have both but just enduro. One I'm taking as long distance dual-purpuse do it all bike, and on the Stark I'm getting better at riding enduro. Its super fun, low maintenance bike. And battery lasts enough for a day session of riding enduro. If they would add another 30% in the future with better battery tech, it would be more than enough.
@Szlejer My varg is an EX road legal. I guarantee the battery would outlast you and i do enduro not cart tracks and i have never drained the battery more than 50% before i need to recharge. it does up to 100 miles thru the woods which are 1 mile from my house and which your KTM would be seized by police in minutes
I own both bikes. I've also owned 3 different 690's; they're fun, but there's no comparison in terms of instant torque with a Stark. The Stark is just leaps and bounds faster than the 690. There's an online race between the Stark and the KTM 450SM by a Swedish guy; both bikes are very close, but both bikes are different tools for different jobs. For a 4hrs trip around town, take the KTM. For a 2-3hrs trip in areas where a motorbike is not allowed, take the Stark. There's nothing more fun than riding an electric bike on trails and hearing for the first time, birds, water running in streams, leaves rustling, and being able to have a conversation with friends riding alongside of you with no engine noise...they're stealth like that. But when the Stark is accelerating hard you will hear the electric whine -- which gets annoying. But for trail riding, or going places where noise is your enemy, the Stark is the choice. Like I said, they're different tools for different jobs. The Stark has by far the power and weight advantage. The KTM has the range advantage. If you can afford it, get both.
The varg has a couple things going for it. One you can ride it at 80 hp if you want on a CBT at 17. The law hasnt caught up to these yet and they are pretty rar in road going form so its unlikely to for a good few years, But the best thing is you can ride it in S E England through pedestrian trails and so long as you aint endangering people nobody bothers you. You try that on a petrol bike and it will be seized very fast. I ride mine in the local countryside every day and if i had a 2 stroke i would be doing top ends every month. All ive done on the varg is 5 oil changes and new tyres in nearly 4000 miles. I use it as a daily driver and its costs pennies. My town was built for bycycles and has 40 miles of cycle track so i rarely touch roads.
@gons.5739.
As an owner of both the Ex & Sm they are both great machines. I got twins, both 80HP Snow White color. That way unless you know, you think I have just 1 bike 😂. I originally got the ex to ride with my sons in the desert and around the house. I wanted to get a set of super moto tires wheels and everything to do a quick easy swap back and forth from street to dirt. Well fast forward I just bought the stark SM. Doesn’t get easier than putting a leg over the bike for what you want to do. But they both are beasts for dirt and street. There are slight differences between the bikes. But I can get about 70 miles on a charge with city riding & using the regen. But both are super fun !!
Sehr gut gemachter Bericht. Hab selbst so eine SM. Die ist wie für mich maßgeschneidert.
Hab mir mal eine als Geschäftsfahrzeug bestellt. Sehr leiwand.
@starkfutureofficial Once again, great video and great bike. Would really love to test the dedicated SM! Do you have any recommendations on keeping the Varg cooler during SM sessions? The season is coming and last year (on the MX 1.0, this year an EX will join the fleet) i had some limitations due to it heating up and loosing top end power to the point where the 450's could keep up to me on the straight. I do 5x 20-30 minute moto's with 4x 30-40 min charging in between. From the end of session 2 the power loss starts to be noticeable, Moto 3 we're neck on neck, somewhere in Moto 4 or 5 the 450's start overtaking me. Notice how i say that at some point the 450's can keep up with me? That really speaks for the amount of performance of this bike. Just wondering if it could be even better and endure longer! That more powerfull charger might also help with keeping the battery at a higher state of charge, when is that comming?
Just bought a stark varg yesterday and its by far my most favorite bike ive ever rode.
TC latency? It has no TC which nearly led to my death last week. This bike needs TC as it snaps in a second if it loses grip
Hi @Visian, The cited claimed mileage from Stark is 53 highway or 73 combined city/highway miles. Let's use that as your upper limits for overall mileage. Speaking generally, you're right that riding behavior will impact range dramatically, but another factor is your horsepower settings. Running the bike at 45 horsepower vs 80 horsepower results in radically different battery consumption. For example, we used up the entire charge during our 54-mile canyon loop that included sporty riding, photo passes, and things of that nature. So, repeated aggressive starting and stopping, along with other sporty riding activities takes its toll on range. The route you take will impact things, too, since ascending hills requires more energy than running on flat roads. We were also flipping through several maps to test different horsepower/regen combinations. So, to sum it all up: yes, you're absolutely correct! Behavior, settings, routes, temperature all has an impact on maximum range. Stark does quite a bit of range testing on their vehicles, so I'd use the 53 highway or 73 combined city/highway figures as a reference point. Take care! - Nic
After 5K km's on the EX, I can tell you this is the most fun bike I've ever ridden. This bike has nothing to prove. Anyone who knows this bike, has deep respect for it. The 80hp I can only use to its fullest when riding higher speeds. powerwheelie at 100km/h is nothing on this bike. it does make you loose your license in a heartbeat. that being said, as enduro rider, I only need about 30hp for off-road trails.
EX owner here. If I do 80 kph I get about 1km per %, so about 100km on a charge. It's not a street bike with unbalanced off-road tires, so I've never actually done 100km in one go. Ride spirited or faster, and you'll get a less. Ride slower, e.g. in the city, and get a lot more. For slower enduro I get tired before the battery does - easily 4-6 hours.
I bought the EX when it first came out and the first thing I did was get an extra set of rims for street tires. I can confirm, you may lose your license quickly if you try riding this bike around the street much. It is impossible to not do wheelies all over the place.
Hey Stark! Yeah, my 14k Stark Varg Alpha MX died for no reason with only 10hrs on it. Great your making new bike, maybe you could help guys out with some of the ones you have sold. Been waiting for a month for anyone to get back to me. Crickets....
I was the first on the east coast with the EX. I through some super motos on it right away. Kinda wish I would have waited. But then again maybe not I’ve been enjoying my Varg.
Have been riding my MX 1.0 in SM setting as well. It's amazing how smooth it is on the track. In the wett it's way faster and more stable than anything out there. Even in the hands of a SM beginner (me) it was the fastest around a wett karting track riding against experienced riders. That was a stock MX 1.0 with just clickers adjusted and some ContiAttack SM's. Imagine what a purpose build SM would do!
It’s all true! Best dirt bike I’ve ever owned, hands down.
my king sur ronster in this 1:29 🥶🥶🥶🥶
I would be ordering a charger for my EX, But you sent me a bike after 3 months of waiting that has a bad headlight, Bad kill switch, And after 65 miles of riding, It keeps cutting power in the middle of traffic 🙃 Nice quality control. I might have a bad throttle or you send a bike with a bad motor or battery. You need to test these bikes before you ship them! I should have to say this 🙃😂
